Education

At Jana Rakshita, we believe education is the key to a brighter, more equitable future for India’s children. Our work focuses on providing quality education to underserved communities, with a special emphasis on Dalit and Adivasi children—the native peoples of India.

During our tsunami relief efforts, we supported five Dalit schools in Tamil Nadu. Seeing the direct impact these facilities had on the community was incredibly inspiring, and simply palpable. Today, we continue our mission by working with five Adivasi schools in Wada and Palghar, Maharashtra, providing sustainable education to more than 1200 children.

What We Do

We build and upgrade classrooms, ensuring schools have essential infrastructure such as clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities. These improvements have a direct impact on school retention rates, especially for adolescent girls who often leave school due to inadequate facilities and menstrual taboos. Separate toilets and menstrual health education create a supportive environment that helps them stay in school.

Our support extends beyond infrastructure. We provide scholarships, school supplies, clothing, sports equipment, and even daily essentials such as groceries and bedding. By addressing both educational and personal needs, we create an environment where every child can thrive.

We take a holistic approach to learning, offering age-appropriate tools and activities that make education engaging through visual and auditory methods. Nutritious meals during school hours further support students’ well-being and academic performance. Ultimately, our initiatives empower children with the tools they need to break cycles of poverty and access greater opportunities for social and economic mobility.

Our Impact

Jana Rakshita has revitalized 12 schools for Adivasi

children in rural Maharashtra. We adopt schools in

various states of disrepair and provide the necessary

upgrades—from constructing classrooms and

installing electrical systems to improving schoolyards

and common areas. In many cases, our efforts have

helped prevent schools from shutting down entirely.

In addition to infrastructure, we provide:

- Essential school supplies and transportation support (tricycles, bicycles).

- Nutritious meals to address food insecurity.

- Sanitation facilities to support gender inclusivity.

- Recreational opportunities through sports and cultural activities.

Our work focuses on removing barriers to education, with a strong emphasis on gender equity and accessibility, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to build a better future for themselves and their communities.

Some of the schools we’ve adopted are:

  • Adivasi Primary School, Ghateghar, Vasai Taluk, Palghar Dist (2019)

  •

Adivasi School ‘Zilla Parishad’, Vasai Taluk, Palghar District.

  • Adivasi High School, Walavanda, Jawahar Taluka, Thane Dist. (2008)
